COVID-19 General Information

There is much to learn about the new novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Based on what is currently known, the spread of the virus from person to person happens most frequently with close contact with an infected person (approximately six feet). This type of transmission occurs via respiratory droplets when an infected person either coughs or sneezes. Additionally, transmission of the virus has also been documented to persons from contact with surfaces contaminated with the virus.

Current research suggests that the novel coronavirus may remain viable for hours or even days on surfaces made from a variety of materials. Cleaning of surfaces followed by disinfection is a best practice measure to follow to aid in the prevention of COVID-19 and other viral respiratory illnesses in households and other types of community settings.

Cleaning Recommendations

Routine proper cleaning of frequently touched surfaces e.g.: tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, desks, keyboards, toilets, door frames and handles, faucets, sinks, elevator cabs, entrances, lobbies, hallways and stairwells is highly recommended. This should be followed by disinfection with an EPA-registered disinfectant that is appropriate for the surfaces being cleaned. Manufacturers' labeling instructions must always be followed. Moist wipe and fogging techniques with electrostatic sprayers have also been used. Technicians should always don proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during these processes.

Cleaning Verification by All Green Air Using ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)

A cleaning verification process that tests for ATP has been used in the health care and food and beverage industry for many years. The presence of ATP (an organic molecule that is used by living cells) on a surface indicates that the surface has not been adequately cleaned and has the potential to harbor and support active bacterial growth.

Therefore, ATP testing has been proven to be an ideal indicator of surface cleanliness. Viruses differ from other living organisms in that they are a protein shell with RNA/DNA inside that does not generate ATP. One can assume that if a rigorous and effective cleaning program reduces the amount of bacteria on a surface, then any viruses on that surface would also have been removed as well. This greatly decreases the chance the virus would be able to spread from surface contact. Most recently, ATP cleaning verification is now being used in the transportation industry by the MTA and Amtrak. Testing results are reported and analyzed in real-time on the day of assessment.
